STRONG
PERFORMANCE FOR SELF IN WEST OPENER AT ROSEVILLE
ARK
CITY, UTAH (March 28, 2010) – NASCAR K&N Pro Series West
Rookie of the Year candidate Michael Self made a huge
impression in the 2010 season opener at All American Speedway
in Roseville, Calif. before a cut tire forced the 19 year-old
to settle for a 15th place finish on Saturday
night.
“I’m very
excited with how strong we were today,” Self said. “We were
running with guys like Holmes and the leaders, and I think we
are going to do very well in Phoenix.”
Self has
already had a busy start to his season with double-duty runs
in the Toyota All-Star Showdown, a second place finish in the
Spring Classic at Stockton 99 Speedway, and extensive testing.
Being
already in midseason form proved to be a great benefit, as
Self guided his Johnnie Walker Performance Center / Motorway
Motorsports Chevrolet to sixth in the opening practice on the
one-third mile asphalt oval. He followed that up by a seventh
place run in the second practice session against a field of 23
cars.
Self was
the first qualifier out and suffered a little bit with that
qualifying draw but still managed to time in 10th
quick.
Before a
sellout crowd of 5000 fans, Self navigated traffic quickly to
move into eighth on the first lap.
Self then
engaged with a heavy battle with fellow rookie Josh Combs up
to a caution on lap 38, when he was relegated to the pits with
a flat tire.
Returning
to the field with 110 laps of racing left and three laps down,
Self went to work. Passing cars on the outside, Self worked
his way forward to run with the top-eight. Self stayed in
stride with two-time champion Eric Holmes and showed top-five
speed on the charts for much of the race.
As the
leaders lapped cars, the rookie advanced in position all the
way to 13th until a caution set up a green white
checkered finish to the race. While avoiding a crash in turn
four coming to the finish, Self lost two positions in the
scramble to finish 15th.
Race fans
can watch Self’s run on tape-delay Thursday April 8 at 6 p.m.
Self’s next
event in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West is April 8 when the
series hits the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway.
Michael’s
next race will be in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
Western Late Models at All American Speedway this Saturday,
April 3. The event is the first points paying race for the
track and should attract a stellar car turnout.
